I acquired my PhD from Indian Institute of Science in Biochemistry and joined department of Biochemistry at Purdue University as a postdoctoral fellow. My research interest always revolved around specialized metabolism and competitive fitness. I am interested in understanding the underlying mechanisms that influence the metabolism of bacteria to elicit certain behaviors. Streptomyces sp. Mg1 produces Linearmycins which result in lysis of proximal Bacillus subtilis when co-cultured together. We also found out that these linearmycins are present in the extracellular vesicles secreted by the Streptomyces. We hypothesize that the production of the exracellular vesicles is related to the biosynthesis of Linearmycins. I am working on localizing the biosynthetic enzymes from linearmycin BGC and observe the effect on membrane stability. I am also interested in isolation and identification of unknown compounds from Streptomyces venezuelae that can trigger mobility response in Bacillus subtilis.
